Session Description:

Single adult members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are blessed with at least two families — their extended/multi-generational family, and their chosen ward family. As a bishop of a Utah mid-singles ward in a family-centered church, Rob sees how his members are often split between regular participation in their nuclear family’s events or deeper engagement in ward opportunities.

This session will feature an open discussion about the choice singles face to either attend to the needs and expectations of a well-meaning family that wants to include them, and/or attend a ward family unit designed to give them opportunities to serve and develop leadership and relationship skills and experiences.

When and how should the single member’s parents and siblings cut the cord and encourage their loved one to have greater involvement with their peer group? Or, is the single member blessed more by tightening their eternal family ties at the expense of their chosen YSA or mid-singles ward unit?
